Padubidri police seized Rs 5 lakh of unaccounted cash from a car during a routine inspection at the Hejamadi check post here on Sunday evening.

With elections fast approaching, the police have been keeping an eye on the illegal smuggling of hawala money.

On Sunday, Padubidri Police Station Sub Inspector Purushotham A stopped a white car, travelling from Mangaluru towards Udupi for inspection. Upon checking he found Rs 5 lakh cash kept in the prasadam bag of Rajarajeshwari temple Polali and stashed away inside the toolbox near the driver’s seat.

The officer questioned the car occupants, identified as Ahmed Kabir and Abdul Qader Jilani about the source of the money but the duo could not produce any documents.

Police seized the cash and the car and are investigating the matter.
