Mangaluru police have seized a total of Rs 4.33 lakh in two separate cases where cash was being transported in vehicles without proper documentation.
On the evening of March 26, Rs 1.10 lakh cash was discovered stashed in a black school bag on the back seat of a car by the Mangaluru East police during routine checks on vehicles at the Nanthoor checkpoint. The two occupants of the car, Anil (35) and Shameel (38) of Kasaragod, were unable to provide any documentation or satisfactory answers when questioned. As a result, the police seized the money and took the individuals into custody.
In a separate incident near Car Street in the city on March 27, the Mangaluru North Police seized Rs 3,23,600 from an Alto car based on a tip-off. The driver, identified as C M Hazim (21) of Bantwal Ammunje, reportedly claimed that the money belonged to his uncle who ran a jewellery shop at Car Street and he had asked him to deliver it to his aunt in B C Road. He did not have any documents for the cash, police said. The police seized the cash, along with the car and Hazim’s mobile phone.
The police have launched an investigation into both incidents and are working to determine the source of the seized cash.
