Kumta: A Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) tanker belonging to the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) toppled on the National Highway 66 at Handigona in the taluk here on the morning of September 26.
The tanker was going to Belgaum after filling LPG from the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) in Mangaluru.
The tanker started to leak the gas after the accident.
Police officials soon arrived at the spot and diverted traffic from the road.
People residing in the nearby area were also evacuated and electricity was also cut off to avoid any fire incident.
A BPCL safety team arrived at the spot from Ankola and plugged the leak.
A similar incident had occurred at Gokarna in September 2015. A tanker had toppled and the leaked gas caused the tanker to catch fire killing one and injuring 14.
