Kundapur: A couple arrested on charges of abandoning their infant in the bushes near the bridge at Muchattu were granted bail by a court here.

On December 1 evening a passerby heard a baby crying and upon checking she found that a girl child, around a week-old, had been abandoned between the bushes here. The lady immediately took the infant to the police station and a case was filed in this regard.

Bases on the clues found at the spot, witness statements, and CCTV footage the police arrested the couple — Satish Poojary (43) and Radhika (40), natives of Byndoor taluk from Kuchuru estate where they work as laborers on December 4. The duo confessed to the crime during the police questioning.

According to the police, Radhika and Sathish were acquainted with each other at their workplace. However, after both their spouses deserted them, the duo’s friendship developed and a year ago they secretly married each other at a temple.

Soon after Radhika became pregnant and delivered the baby in a private hospital at Haladi. However, the couple did not want to keep the child and hence they put her in a handbag and abandoned her in the bushes here.

Meanwhile, the rescued infant was sent to Kundapur government hospital.
