Kundapur: After months of waiting, the Indira canteen at Shastri Circle here was inaugurated by the district in-charge minster Dr Jayamala on Wednesday, November 21st.
Speaking with the media the minister said, “1.40 lac people in the state are benefiting due to Indira Canteens. Udupi district has received four such canteens. The success of Indira Canteen has made us think of mobile canteens especially for visitors of patients. The food is cheap here and it helps in generation of jobs,” said Jayamala.
“The deputy commissioner is likely to start ‘Ganji Oota’ on the basis of opinions of people,” infomred the minister.
The inauguration was attended by MLC R Pratapchandra Shetty, DC Priyanka Mary Francis, T Bhoobalan, Kiran Padnekar, municipal council members, taluk panchayat members and elected representatives.
The canteen inauguration was delayed because of the election code of conduct in effect for many months and had let many people unhappy.
The canteen has the present capacity of providing food to three hundred people in a day. Further changes will be made on the basis of demand. The building and machinery are being used similar to Amma Canteens in Tamil Nadu and the equipment and the building has cost Rs 72 lakh.
