A shopowner in Kundapur received an exorbitant electric bill to the tune of Rs 1 crore from the power distribution company here recently.
The actual consumption of the electricity at the shop was 1,574 units however due to a mistake made by the meter reader, the bill erroneously stated a consumption of 13,11,155 units. Subsequently, the bill generated totaled Rs 1,01,75,893 including fuel adjustment and taxes.
The error became known upon inspection of the bill and was brought to the attention of the meter reader. Since the meter reader did not have the authority to withdraw the generated bill, the issue was escalated to Mescom officials, who promptly rectified the discrepancy and issued a revised bill to the shop.
Notably, there have been other instances where consumers complained of similar billing errors.
Recently Belagavi University received a bill of Rs 35 lac, instead of the usual Rs 18 lac, while a resident of Ullalbail was billed a staggering amount of Rs 7.71 lac, despite their normal bill amount being only Rs 3,000. Furthermore, a shop in Kundapur received a bill of Rs 1,000 despite consuming only 2 units of electricity.
The authorities are actively working to address these billing discrepancies to prevent such errors from occurring in the future.
