Kundapura: In yet another night-time accident, a car rammed into a pedestrian, killing him on the spot near Nehru Maidan on National Highway here on Thursday night. Locals blamed the unlit stretch of the National Highway for the frequent accidents.

Shivappa (32), a laborer from Ramdurga was the unfortunate victim. The incident occurred at about 7.45 PM when he was walking on the roadside when the car coming from Udupi hit him. Due to the impact, Shivappa was killed on the spot.

Kundapura Traffic police inspected the spot and have registered a case.

No proper street lighting

Locals alleged the lack of general street lighting for the frequent accidents. It has been nearly a year since the National Highway widening works were completed, but street lights are not installed at the underpass and the highway stretch in the city limits, where there is high pedestrian traffic. Moreover, the signage and road beacons are also absent making matters worse, locals alleged.

Even though the issue was brought to the notice of NHAI authorities, no action has been initiated to rectify the issues. Udayavani had also published several special reports about the issue.

Locals outraged

Locals are outraged at the apathy shown by the highway authorities and the people’s representatives. This is the sixth accident since the flyover was opened for traffic, they said.
