A 21-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of deceiving a minor girl into a relationship and impregnating her.

The accused, Mithun, allegedly befriended the 17-year-old girl and promised marriage, later taking her home and forcing himself on her.

The girl’s health declined, and a hospital visit revealed she was pregnant, prompting her father to file a police complaint.

Based on the complaint, Inspector Nandkumar of Kundapura registered the case and following an investigation submitted the charge sheet to the court.

Hearing the case Judge Srinivas Suvarna pronounced the verdict after examining 16 of the 30 witnesses and considering the DNA evidence.

The accused was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 21,000. Of the fine amount, Rs 15,000 is to be paid to the girl, and Rs 6,000 to the government. The court also ordered the government to provide the affected girl with Rs 2 lakh as compensation. The case was argued on behalf of the government by Special Public Prosecutor Y.T. Raghavendra.
