Kundapura: Abhishek Shetty from Ulluru village in the taluk here has secured 5th rank in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), a nationwide competitive examination in engineering.

9.5 lakh students appeared for the examination across the country and only 17.82 per cent of them have passed.

Abhishek had secured a rank of 789 in last year’s examination. He decided to retake the examination this year and studied online in preparation for it.

Abhishek’s father is a rickshaw driver. He studied in the Government Higher Primary School, Government High School and completed his PUC in Shankaranarayana all in Kannada medium.

He then studied mechanical engineering at NIES College, Mysuru.

“The COVID-19 lockdown gave me a good time to prepare for the examination. I learned a lot through online classrooms. I was not satisfied with the rank I got last time, so I appeared for the examination again this year. I am glad to have secured a good rank. My goal is to work in any government mechanical engineering job,” Abhishek said.
