Kundapura: A young man was swept away by strong waves at Bijadi Beach near Koteshwara while on an outing with a friend on Wednesday at around 6:45 PM. His friend, who attempted to rescue him, also was in danger and was saved by the locals.

The deceased has been identified as Yogesh (23), son of Rajesh from Tumkur district’s Tiptur. His friend, Sandeep (24) from the same district, was rescued by the locals.

Incident Details

Yogesh and Sandeep had visited the beach near Daras Mane for a leisure trip. In the evening, the weather worsened with increased rain, strong waves, and high winds. Yogesh entered the water and was soon caught by the powerful waves. Sandeep tried to save him but was also pulled by the waves.

Local residents intervened and managed to rescue Sandeep, but Yogesh was swept away and went missing in the sea.

Yogesh and Sandeep were in Bijadi to attend the wedding of their friend Vinay’s sister, scheduled for June 20.

Upon learning of the incident, Kundapur Circle Inspector Nandakumar, Town Station SI Prasad Kumar, police personnel, and coastal security guards visited the scene and initiated a search operation for the missing youth.

However, the search was called off due to nightfall and will resume on Thursday morning.

Rough Sea Warning

During the monsoon season, the intensity of the waves and the wind is higher than usual. Entering the sea for swimming, playing, or taking photos can be dangerous. Visitors to the beach, both locals and tourists, should exercise caution and avoid negligence, as even a moment’s lapse can pose a threat to life.
