Udupi: Keeping in view hygiene-related issues, MLA K. Raghupati Bhat on Monday said that work on the construction of a new slaughterhouse will be undertaken in the district soon after identifying land for it.
In the absence of a full-fledged slaughter house, mutton vendors slaughter the goats at the Adiudupi fish market which often leads to clogging of drains, said Bhat after inspecting the fish market here.
Following the closure of a small slaughterhouse near Beedinagudde here, the mutton stall owners have been voicing demand for a new slaughter-house, he added. Moreover, people have been complaining about the unhygienic conditions at the fish market owing to the slaughtering of animals here, he said adding that the administration will soon identify land for the new slaughterhouse.
Bhat also directed Udupi City Municipal Council Commissioner Anand Kalholikar to take steps to maintain cleanliness in the Adiudupi fish market. He heard grievances of fisherwomen and others at the fish market.
