Landslides on Shiradi, Sampaje Ghats: KSRTC premium bus services curtailed

Mangaluru: Due to a landslide in the Shiradi-Sampaje Ghat, 50% of the premium bus services from the Mangaluru KSRTC division have been cancelled.

Non-AC sleeper, Rajahamsa, and regular buses from the KSRTC division are now operating via the Charmadi route. However, premium buses such as Ambari Utsav, Volvo Multi-Axle, and Dream Class Sleeper cannot operate on the Charmadi Ghat road due to its condition, making the Shiradi route the only viable option.

Out of the 40 premium buses that depart nightly, only about 20 are currently operating through Shiradi. The rest have been cancelled. The Puttur KSRTC division, which has no premium bus services, remains unaffected.

3 hours wait on the Ghat

Premium buses departing from Mangaluru at around 10:30 or 11 PM reach Shiradi at around 2 to 3 AM. As vehicle movement begins only after 6 AM, passengers have to wait in the bus for 3 hours in Shiradi. Buses departing at 6 AM reach Bengaluru by around 11 AM.

Passengers are informed about this delay in advance by KSRTC before boarding. However, buses departing from Bengaluru reach Shiradi by 4 AM, which poses less of a problem, according to KSRTC Divisional Control Officer Rajesh Shetty.

Exploring Alternative Routes

KSRTC officials are exploring alternative routes to Shiradi Ghat. One option is to reach Bengaluru via Hulikal Ghat, which adds an extra 120 km. Another route is to turn right at Karkala and travel through Kudremukh-Kalasa-Chikkamagaluru, which adds 45 km. However, this route is not suitable due to its narrow width. Travel through Bisile Ghat is also being considered, but the Subrahmanya area faces challenges due to waterlogging. Ultimately, Shiradi Ghat remains the only viable route for now.

Fare Hike Amidst Issues

Meanwhile, some private buses have significantly increased ticket prices, causing outrage among passengers. On July 21, the maximum fare from Mangaluru to Bengaluru is Rs 5,000. Notably, during online booking, the maximum fare from Uppinangady to Bengaluru on July 21 is shown as Rs 9,000. No private buses operate through Shiradi Ghat at night, and none reach Uppinangady. This discrepancy in fare listing and booking has left passengers puzzled.
