Udupi: Governor of Karnataka Thawar Chand Gehlot inaugurated the silver jubilee celebrations of Udupi District at the Ajjarakad ground here on Thursday, August 25.

Speaking on the occasion, Gehlot said that he was happy to be participating in such a historical event. Udupi is popular as a temple town in India but also the world over. Since its inception, Udupi has grown quickly. Let it also be one of the leading districts of Karnataka on the path of progress, he opined.

The Central and state governments will provide more emphasis to infrastructure development of the district. Udupi will surely become one of the top districts of the state in a very short period of time if the people’s representatives, officials and people here contribute to the progress of the district, he said.

The celebrations began with a grand Shobhayathra flagged off by MLA Raghupathi Bhat from the Board High School, near the service bus stand. A palanquin was carried out along the main junctions of the city to reach the Ajjarkad ground.

On this occasion, K. Jayaprakash Hegde who played a key role in the founding of Udupi,  Dr Kalpana Gopalan who became the first Deputy Commissioner of the newly formed Udupi district,  Vice Chancellor Lt Gen (Dr.) M D Venkatesh on behalf of MAHE which sponsored the Silver jubilee program, Dr. G Shankar, and Vishal Hegde the Pro-Chancellor NITTE (Deemed to be University) were felicitated.
