Belagavi: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told the Legislative Assembly that prohibiting liquor sale in the state was “impossible.”

Siddaramaiah responding to demands from BJP seeking liquor ban said it was impossible to bring a total ban on alcohol in the state.

“It is impossible for the government to ban liquor,” he said. “Liquor prohibition has not worked anywhere. Look at Gujarat, which is supposed to be a dry state. See how well the liquor ban is being implemented,” Siddaramaiah said.

Siddaramaiah directed the BJP members to convince PM Modi to bring about a national policy to prohibit liquor. “If there’s a national policy on this, Karnataka will support it,” he said.

Excise Minister R B Thimmapur said that government generates Rs 11,000 crore from liquor.

BJP leader C T Ravi demanded a ban on liquor stating it was “destroying families.”
