Lonely journalism student commits suicide in hostel room

Bengaluru: A 20-year-old journalism student allegedly committed suicide by consuming pills in her hostel room on Wednesday evening.
The deceased, Sofiya Damani, a native of Mumbai was a final year BA Journalism student of Kristu Jayanti College Hostel in Kothanur.
On Wednesday Sofiya, who shared the room with a classmate told her that she will stay back in the hostel. She was later found lying dead on her bed by a maid who visited her room around 3.30 pm. The maid alerted the hostel authorities, who informed the police.
The police found two empty medicine bottles lying on the floor and suspected that she had committed suicide by consuming pills. According to the police, Sofiya was suffering from depression since she was staying away from her parents.
Sofiya’s parents live in Dubai, while her grandparents stay in Mumbai. She also had some health issues and was taking treatment for anaemia, said the police.
A case of unnatural death has been registered.
