New Delhi: Madhya Pradesh is currently experiencing a huge political crisis. Kamal Nath government is expected to fall as Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia resigned from Congress.
The developments happened soon after Scindia met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home minister Amit Shah.
Scindia has been upset with Congress leadership and its handling of affairs in Madhya Pradesh.
BJP is now seeking a floor test against CM Kamal Nath led government. Floor test is a constitutional mechanism used to determine if the incumbent government enjoys the support of the legislature.
Sources claim that around 22 MLAs loyal to Scindia have also submitted their resignation to the governor. Now the strength of Congress drops to 92 on its own and it has support of seven allegiance legislators. On the other hand, BJP has 107 on its own.
In this scenario, if Congress goes in for a floor test it is bound to lose, and it will make way for BJP to form the government in Madhya Pradesh.
Prior to the resignations, the halfway mark was 115. Congress had 114, BJP had 107 and the others 7. The total strength of Madhya Pradesh assembly is 228. Now if the speaker accepts the resignation the house strength will come down by 206 which means the halfway mark would be 103. As said earlier, Congress would have 92 and BJP 107.
But, if the resigned MLAs join BJP before the acceptance of the resignation then action can be taken under the anti-defection law.
As for now, both BJP and Congress have shifted their MLAs to hotel on Gurugram and Jaipur respectively.MLAs close to Scindia are in Bengaluru.
However, Senior Congress leader and former CM Digvijaya Singh has said that the government will take the floor test and there is no question of CM Kamal Nath stepping down. But as said earlier it is numerically difficult for Congress to prove its majority.
