Madikeri: Three labourers were killed due to a mud collapse at a construction site in the Stuart Hill area in Madikeri city on Tuesday, October 31.

The unfortunate event occurred at around 5.45 pm as the workers were excavating soil for the construction of a retaining wall on private land.

The deceased have been identified as Basava (35) and Lingappa (45), from Hubballi, and Anand (35) from Haveri district.

It is gathered that 9 workers were at the construction site at the time of the incident. Suddenly the loose soil collapsed burying 4 among them. One of the workers, identified as Raju, was rescued by the other workers and escaped with his life.

Soon after, a search and rescue operation was launched. The efforts of police and fire brigade teams to rescue the workers trapped under the debris turned futile. The bodies of the labourers were extracted and have been shifted to the district hospital.

Two labourers — identified as Manju (38) and Raju (35) — were injured in the mishap but are reported to be safe.

Further investigations are underway.
