Madikeri: The First Additional District and Sessions Court in Madikeri has sentenced a 35-year-old man to life imprisonment in a theft and murder case.

The accused Anil (35), a resident of Moodbidri, was convicted of the murder of Lalitha B.P. (70) and the theft of cash and gold jewelry in 2021. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 45,000 on the convict.

Judge G. Prashanthi, delivering the verdict on January 28, stated that failure to pay the fine would result in an additional one-year jail term.

The incident occurred on February 22, 2021, at K. Nidugane village on the outskirts of Madikeri. Lalitha B.P. was alone at her residence near a resort when the accused struck her on the head, killing her, and fled with cash and gold jewelry. A case was registered at the Madikeri Rural Police Station following a complaint.

Anil, who worked at the nearby resort, was arrested on March 22, 2021, and presented before the court. The investigating officers, including Inspector Ravikiran and ASI Manjunath M.N., along with their team, completed the investigation and submitted a charge sheet to the court on May 29, 2021.

Prosecution’s argument

Government prosecutor Devendra N.P. presented evidence and witnesses that led to the conviction of Anil. The court found him guilty of murder and theft, sentencing him to life imprisonment under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
