Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College to celebrate platinum jubilee from Nov 29 to Dec 1

Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) College in Udupi will commemorate its 75th anniversary with a grand Platinum Jubilee celebration from November 29 to December 1. The announcement was made by the Academy of General Education (AGE) Secretary, B.P. Varadaraya Pai, during a press conference on Wednesday.

Program Highlights

November 29

  • 9:00 AM: Inauguration of the “Amrutha Soudha” by College Trust President T. Satish U. Pai, in the presence of Shri Vidyasagaratheertha Swamiji of Shri Krishnapur Math.
  • 9:30 AM: Udupi Deputy Commissioner Dr. K. Vidyakumari will inaugurate an exhibition, followed by the release of a commemorative postal envelope.
  • Key dignitaries, including MLA Yashpal Suvarna, AGE Registrar Ranjan R. Pai, TMA Pai Foundation President Ashok Pai, and others, will grace the occasion.
  • 12:00 PM: Felicitation of Board Members.
  • 2:00 PM: Honoring of retired principals, teaching, and non-teaching staff.

November 30

  • 8:15 AM: Torch relay ceremony at Shri Krishna Math, with Shri Sugunendratheertha Swamiji of Puttige Math handing over the torch.
  • 9:00 AM: MLA Ranjan R. Pai will flag off a procession starting from Gandhi Main School to MGM College.
  • 11:30 AM: “MGM Nenapu” (MGM Memories) program to reminisce the college’s journey.
  • 12:30 PM: Screening of a documentary on the history and achievements of MGM College.

December 1

  • 9:30 AM: Cultural programs by students.
  • 11:00 AM: Alumni reunion with keynote address by NITI Aayog member and Hyderabad Power Finance Corporation professor Prof. Prasanna Tantri.
  • 3:30 PM: Valedictory program presided over by Paryaya Pejawar Swamiji and College Trust President T. Satish U. Pai.
  • Chief Guests: District Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar, MP Kota Srinivas Poojary, MLA Yashpal Suvarna, and other notable figures.
  • 5:30 PM: Musical evening featuring performances by Shri Vidyabhushan and Medha Hiranyayi.

Historical Significance

Established in 1949 by Dr. T.M.A. Pai as Udupi’s first college, MGM College began its journey in Gandhi Main School and relocated to its current picturesque campus a year later. Over the past 75 years, it has become a beacon of quality education and cultural heritage, said B.P. Varadaraya Pai.

Leadership and Support

The event is supported by various department heads, including Principal Prof. Lakshminarayana Karanth, Vice Principals Malathi Devi A. and Dr. Devidas S. Naik, and others, along with alumni and faculty members.
