PTI, Dec 21, 2023, 9:39 AM IST

In the undivided Dakshina Kannada district, over three years, 40 out of the 69 individuals engaged in criminal activities such as illegal cow smuggling, assault, gambling, drug trafficking, attempted murder, and persistent criminal cases have been subjected to deportation.

The practice of deportation is commonly observed during elections, focusing on those who pose a threat to peace and order due to their involvement in criminal activities.

Deportation Criteria:

Individuals engaged in activities leading to riots or inciting them through inflammatory speeches are prohibited from participating in meetings. Those involved in criminal acts may be deported under the Karnataka Police Act 1963, Columns 54 to 63. The Police Department submits a proposal to the Collector/Sub-Divisional Officer for the deportation of specific individuals. A notice is then issued based on this proposal, initiating the deportation process.

Deportation Period:

Deportation may last for six months, especially during elections or special conventions. Individuals who provide written consent to the deportation notice can be released from the deportation order. The duration of deportation is determined based on the severity of the case.

Deportation Instances:

In the years 2021, 2022, and 2023, 18 individuals in Udupi received deportation notices, with 12 of them being deported. Among these, 5 were involved in illegal cattle trafficking, 5 in assault and robbery, 1 in Matka, 2 in drug trafficking, and 3 in attempted murder.

Not Deported:

In 2021 and 2022, some individuals did not face deportation. However, in 2023, 51 individuals received notices, and 28 of them were deported. The deportation of 28 persons with a criminal background aimed to safeguard public life and property, serving as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order during elections.

Deportation notices are issued on various occasions, including elections, with a typical duration of six months and the possibility of extension.
