Bengaluru police have nabbed a notorious peddler attempting to sell ganja in the state capital and confiscated a staggering 4 quintals of Ganja worth Rs 2.47 crore.

The accused has been identified as Abdul Rehman alias Ajju a resident of DJ Halli.

DJ Halli police made the arrest following an investigation into drug peddler Nawaz, who had been selling ganja near Idgah Maidan on DJ Halli Tannery Road. During interrogation, Nawaz revealed that he had purchased the ganja from notorious peddlers Firoz Khan and Prasad from Andhra Pradesh.

Upon receiving information that Firoz Khan and Prasad had arrived in Bengaluru to sell a large quantity of ganja, the DJ Halli police launched a raid on February 27. Although the two accused managed to evade capture, Abdul Rehman, who was with them, was caught. He subsequently led the police to a rented house in DJ Halli, where the ganja was stored.

Abdul Rehman has been in jail several times for ganja peddling and had been sought by the police for several years, police sources said.

Modus operandi

According to sources, the peddlers had devised a new strategy to supply ganja to evade detection. Prasad and Firoz would procure 15-20 kg of ganja from Vizag, Andhra Pradesh at cheap rates and bring it to Bengaluru by train. An hour before the train was to arrive in Bengaluru they would alert Abdul Rehman.

Abdul Rehman would then wait near the railway tracks in DJ Halli for the train and collect the gunny bags containing ganja thrown by Firoz Khan and Prasad from the moving train. He then transported the sacks of ganja on a two-wheeler to the rented house and stored them. The contraband was then repackaged and sold to clients for a huge margin, sources said.

The police investigation has revealed that the drug peddlers had formed a network to sell drugs, with college students, IT-BT employees, and local youths among their clients, sources said.

Abdul Rehman has been in jail several times for ganja peddling and had been sought by the police for several years, sources added.
