Malayalam film editor Nishad Yusuf found dead in Kochi home; Police launch probe

Kochi: In a tragic development for the Malayalam film industry, acclaimed editor Nishad Yusuf was found dead at his residence in Kochi’s Panampilly Nagar in the early hours of October 30.

According to reports, the Kerala Police have launched an investigation but are yet to announce any conclusions regarding the cause of death.

The Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) Directors’ Union expressed sorrow over his passing, confirming the news on their social media page. Posting a tribute in Malayalam, they stated, “The untimely departure of Nishad Yusuf, a prominent force behind the evolution of contemporary Malayalam cinema, is a loss that will deeply affect the film world.”

The union extended its condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, highlighting his contributions to the industry.

Although local media outlets suggest suicide as a possible cause, officials have yet to confirm or deny this speculation as investigations continue.

A Celebrated Editor in South Indian Cinema

Nishad Yusuf was known for his influential role in Malayalam and Tamil films. His work in Thallumaala, Unda, One, Saudi Vellakka, and Adios Amigos garnered widespread appreciation, making him a respected figure in the industry. Recently, he had taken on his biggest project yet, Kanguva, a pan-India film featuring Suriya and Bobby Deol, set to release on November 14.

Yusuf, a Harippad native, received the Kerala State Award for Best Editor in 2022 for his exemplary work on Thallumaala. Beyond Kanguva, he was actively editing other notable projects, including Bazooka, starring Malayalam icons Mohanlal and Mammootty, and Alappuzha Gymkhana.
