Malpe: Fishing boat sinks, 6 fishermen rescued

Malpe: A deep-sea fishing boat sunk after hitting a sea rock while returning to Malpe port. 6 fishermen aboard the boat were rescued.
The boat, Sri Swarnraj, left the port on May 14. On May 19 at about 10:30 pm, the boat was about 6 kilometres from Malpe port on its return when it’s steering broke. The uncontrolled boat, pushed by the winds and waves, collided with a rock. The impact damaged the boat and made water to gush in.
Another boat, Pandarthi Tirtha, which was nearby came to the rescue of the fishermen on board.
Attempts to salvage the sinking boat by the boat Sri Charana was unsuccessful.
Fishes worth Rs 5 lakh, fishing nets and stored diesel were lost to the sea. An estimated total loss of Rs 80 lakh was incurred with the sink.
