Udupi: A giant stingray fish weighing around 1.200 kg was caught in a net laid by a deep sea fishing boat that had sailed off from Malpe port.
The giant fish which reached Malpe port on Saturday was caught in the net laid by Vighnaraj boat belonging to Mithun Kunder and had to lift ashore using a crane. The fish is called ‘Thorake’ or ‘Kombu Thorake’ in locally. A fish of this dimension is seen very rarely and scores of people amassed to witness it. A video clip of the huge fish has gone viral on social media.
Apparently, the boat had left the shore ten days back. This fish was captured three days back at a depth of about 100 metres. During the auction, the fish was sold at Rs 50 per kg, informed Mr Kunder.
