Mamallapuram first in India to achieve Green Destination benchmark
PTI, Jun 8, 2024, 12:40 PM IST
Mamallapuram, known for its UNESCO World Heritage status, is gearing up to become India’s first Green Destination. Officials announced that the final award will be formally presented after an audit in the coming months. This will make it the first World Heritage Site in the Asia Pacific to achieve such an accolade.
Green Destinations, a certification body based in The Netherlands and accredited by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, is overseeing the process. A total of 122 destinations globally have received this certification to date.
The project for Mamallapuram’s certification has received full financial backing from the MAMAT Trust under the auspices of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. This initiative underscores their efforts to honor and promote Indian culture and heritage on the global stage.
