B’luru: Man accused of niece’s rape-murder commits suicide in jail

A 31-year-old truck driver who was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting and killing his two-and-a-half-year-old niece was found hanging in Central Prison on Saturday morning.

The accused, Deepu, a resident of Attibele was arrested on March 28 under the POCSO Act and was lodged in Parappana Agrahara jail.

On Saturday morning the prison authorities found him hanging in the washroom around 5.30 am and he was immediately taken to the hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. A case of unnatural death has been registered.

The sexual assault on the two-and-a-half-year-old had taken place on March 20 when Deepu took her out in his car. As the toddler started crying, Deepu slapped her and she fell unconscious. He then took her to a hospital where he claimed that she fell and hurt herself in the car when he applied the brake.

The doctors declared her brought dead. The sexual assault came to light after the post-mortem report.
