Bengaluru: A 40-year-old man using attention diversion tactics to rob unsuspecting women while posing as a police officer was arrested by the police.

The arrested,  Syed Abubakar of Chandra Layout used to intoduce himself as a cop to his victims and would tell them that a chain snatching gang was on the prowl in the area. He would then ask the women to remove their chains and cover them in a napkin and on the pretext of dropping them till the end of the road to ensure their safety he managed to steal the jewellery without the victim’s knowledge.

The victims never suspected him as Abubakar would dress like a police officer and used to speak over a walkie talkie, held in his hand passing on instructions to his subordinates about the chain snatchers. Nearly 40 women, most of them above 50 had fallen prey to his tactic and had lost their gold chains worth Rs 50 lakh.

The police confiscated the uniform and the walkie-talkie, both of which Abubakar had stolen but are yet to recover all the jewellery he stole across the city
