Man sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for abduction and rape of minor

Udupi: The District Additional and Sessions Court (POCSO Special Court) here, on Friday, sentenced a man to 10 years in jail in connection with the kidnapping and rape of a minor girl that took place seven years ago in Kundapur police station limits.

According to the prosecution, in 2015 the accused, Bharat (30), forcibly had physical relations by promising to marry her. He then abducted the girl in a car, on the way he tied a thread around her neck as a sign of marriage and took her to a room in Bengaluru.

The girl’s father lodged a missing complaint and the police later traced the accused and the victim in Bengaluru. Based on the statement given by the girl, the accused was arrested and remanded to judicial custody and later let on bail.

Kundapur circle inspector Diwakar P M, who was the investigating officer, had filed the charge sheet against the accused.

After hearing the arguments, testimonies, and other evidence, the court held the accused guilty as charged and sentenced him to 3 years rigorous imprisonment for kidnapping, and 10 years rigorous imprisonment for rape. the court also ordered the government to pay a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the victim.
