Man who stole hired car arrested after 17 years

Mangaluru: Nearly 17 years after a man stole a car that he had hired on rent, the Puttur police on Monday, November 5 arrested the accused person. 

B M Haneef, a native of Sullia is the arrested. Sudheer Prabhu, the other accused in the case is still at large.

On March 8, 2001, Haneef, then a resident of Kudige in Kushalnagar and his friend Sudheer had hired the car belonging to Jayanth of Mangaluru. Later the duo travelled in it to Sakleshpur and Hassan in the guise of timber merchants, informed SP Ravikanthe Gowda.

After travelling to different places in Hassan district, the duo asked the driver to park the car in front of a tourist home at Puttur on March 12, 2001. Later, they stole the car when the driver was away.

Following the incident, a case was registered at Puttur town police station.
