Mandatory Kannada for UG students suspended in K’taka

The state government has said that students who do not wish to take the Kannada language in undergraduate courses should not be compelled to do so until further orders from the high court.

The Karnataka government has also issued a circular in this regard based on an interim order of the HC.

The students who have already signed up for the Kannada-language course now have the freedom of choice.

Signed by Mahesh R, undersecretary to the department of higher education (university), the circular is addressed to all vicechancellors and registrars of public (other than VTU) and private universities; principals of government, a ided and unaided colleges; and officials in the higher education department a s well a s the Karnataka State Higher Education Council.

Through a circular on August 7, 2021, the state government had mandated that students who pursue degree courses in colleges in Karnataka must learn Kannada in line with the National Education Policy.
