Mangaluru: The Mangalore Central and Mangalore Junction(Kankanady) railways stations are among the 1,000 railway stations that will be upgraded as part of the Amrit Bharat Scheme under the Ministry of Railways.

Apart from these two stations, Bantwal, Subrahmanya Road and Kasargod stations will also be upgraded under the proposed scheme.

The railway stations have been selected on the basis of revenue and passenger volume. The scheme aims to beautify and enhance facilities for rail passengers.

In Mangaluru, the proposal may look to solve the connectivity issue as though Mangalore Junction Station falls under city limits, people have expressed concerns over its connectivity. Also, the possibility of constructing an additional platform at Mangalore Central station which has a substantial passenger volume.

Other facilities such as additional accelerators, digital information boards, additional entrance gates, and a building where passengers can avail rooms to rest against payment are being considered.

A sum of Rs 8-10 crores will be sanctioned for 15 railway stations of Mysuru division of South Western Railway that have been selected for the Amrit Bharat Scheme. The fund allocation can be further enhanced based on a comprehensive project report.
