Despite facing financial difficulties, Mangalore University has marked a significant achievement by securing eight patents over the past few years. The university began the process of filing for patents in 2017, and since then, there has been steady progress in this area. Of the eight patent applications, two have already been officially published.

“Since the academic year 2018-19, the university has been awarded eight patents across various departments. The first patent was granted for research conducted by K.R. Chandrashekhar and Bhagya Nekrakala from the Department of Applied Botany. The Department of Chemistry has also seen success, with Bhoja Poojary and Jagadish Prasad each receiving two patents. Additionally, Ambarish from the Department of Electronics has secured a patent,” said Ganesh Sanjeev, Head of the Patent Division at Mangalore University.

Further, A.M. Khan from the Department of Electronics and B.K. Sarojini from the Department of Industrial Chemistry have each submitted their patents in written form, awaiting final approval. Other faculty members have also submitted applications for patents.

Out of the eight patents, seven have been granted domestically, while one was awarded by the United States. The latter was achieved in collaboration with King Faisal University. Patents, which provide legal protection for innovations, are a crucial recognition for the research conducted at universities, offering inventors security for their discoveries.
