Mangaluru: Assault on social activist Asif at Suratkal toll gate; six transgenders held

Mangaluru: Police have arrested six transgenders accused of assaulting social activist ‘Apatbhandhava’ Asif at NITK toll gate here last night.
The arrested Vasavi Gowda (32), a native of Mandya, Lipika (19), a native of Davangere, Hima (24) from Hassan, Adya (22) from Mysuru, Maya (28) from Mysuru, and Maithri (28) from Ramnagar. All are residents of Pandavapura taluk have been booked under sections 143,147, 504, 506, 294 and 149 of the IPC.
City police commissioner N Shashi Kumar, in a press briefing informed that the arrested accused had been produced in court.
They alleged protestors of misbehaving with them, he added. Regarding the protests being held at the toll gate, the Compol said that as no permission has been sought for the protest, police would initiate appropriate action.
On the issue of friction at six colleges in the city over Hijab, Shashi Kumar said that two burqa-clad students of Dayanand Pai degree college and 26 students of Pompei college returned home after being denied entry for wearing Hijab citing the High Court order. At the remaining four colleges, students agreed to remove Hijab to attend classes.
He further added that there was no case of any student wearing saffron shawls in college campuses.
