Mangaluru: CCB police arrest 3 involved in illegal ambergris trade

Mangaluru: CCB police apprehended three individuals involved in the illicit trade of Ambergris, a rare wildlife substance, near Panambur beach earlier on Monday.
The accused have been identified as Jayakara (39) hailing from Saligrama village, Udupi district; Aditya (25) from Sagar Taluk, Shivamogga district; and Lohit Kumar Gurappanavar (39) from Shiggaon, Haveri district.
As much as 900 grams of Ambergris with an estimated street value of Rs. 90 lakhs was confiscated from the trio.
Ambergris, colloquially known as “whale vomit,” is a rare substance produced by sperm whales and is highly sought after in the fragrance industry due to its distinctive aroma. Its scarcity and unique olfactory properties have made it a prized commodity in global markets.
This operation was conducted under the strategic guidance of Commissioner of Police Mangaluru City Anupam Agrawal, police said.
