Mangaluru: The chief district and sessions court here found a man guilty of possessing and travelling on a counterfeit passport and sentenced him to one-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,000.
Abdul Basheer (45), a resident of Kanhangad in Kerala’s Kasargod district is the guilty.
Basheer had travelled to Dubai from Mangaluru in August 2010 on the counterfeit passport. He was arrested by the authorities in Dubai and was deported to India.
He along with three others who helped him procure the passport were put on trial. However, he was tried separately as the other three were absconding.
In February 2019, Basheer was released by the court of the additional senior judicial magistrate but it was appealed by the prosecution in the chief district and sessions court where he was found guilty under various provisions of the Passport Act.
