Mangaluru: Cyclone Fengal remnants bring heavy rain; disrupt normal life

Mangaluru: Heavy rain triggered by Cyclone Fengal continues to lash the city. On Tuesday morning, Mangaluru witnessed overcast skies and rainfall, disrupting normalcy in several areas.

With the district administration declaring a holiday for anganwadis, primary, high schools, and pre-university colleges, traffic remained lighter than usual during the morning hours.

Several inner roads in the Kodialguthu area were waterlogged, briefly halting vehicular movement. Municipal workers promptly cleared drains to ease water flow. At a mall in Kodialbail, the parking lot was submerged under approximately 2 feet of water. Fire department personnel are working with two pumps to drain the accumulated water.

Ongoing construction projects, including those under the Jalasiri scheme, have exacerbated issues. Loose soil from dug-up concrete roads spilled onto the streets, posing risks for two-wheeler riders.

Heavy rain on Monday evening also led to water entering shops and hotels in some areas, where clearing efforts are underway. With an Orange Alert still in effect, rainfall is expected to continue across the coastal region.

Wall Collapse in Falnir

In Falnir’s Mathias Compound area, the compound wall of a house occupied by a lone elderly woman collapsed. Officials from the city corporation and fire department visited the site, but the resident refused to leave her home. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Residents are advised to stay alert as the weather conditions persist.
