Mangaluru: District Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan has directed that teams of geologists and engineers conduct a technical study of potential landslide areas across the district’s taluks from August 16 to 21, to develop an action plan to prevent landslides.
In a meeting at the District Collector’s office, various departmental officials and committee members discussed the preparation of an action plan to prevent landslides as per the guidelines issued by the NDMA in Delhi.
Officials were instructed to upload geo-tagged photos of already cut hillsides and details of the houses and population in those areas on a web portal by August 15.
To understand the technical aspects and design suitable structures to prevent landslides, discussions were held with scientists from the Geological Survey of India and the National Institute of Rock Mechanics, Bengaluru.
The Geological Survey of India’s identified maps of 28 potential landslide areas are at a 1:50,000 scale. It was decided to prepare more detailed maps at a 1:10,000 or 1:1,000 scale for further study and technical recommendations.
The NIRM director suggested taking immediate necessary measures in potential landslide areas and long-term measures after the study.
