Mangaluru: The iconic Kalasha monument that once adorned Pumpwell Circle will soon be restored, fulfilling a long-standing demand. Preparations for its reinstallation are underway, and a beautiful Kalasha, similar to the original, is expected to be completed within two months.
The project is being undertaken jointly by the Mangaluru Jain Society and Mangaluru Smart City Ltd., with the initial stages of work already in progress. The Kalasha will be constructed on the traffic island along the road leading from Pumpwell to Garodi. Large pipes occupying the site have already been removed, and construction is set to begin shortly. The Smart City project will initially handle the foundation work, followed by the Jain Society taking charge of the Kalasha’s installation.
As before, the Kalasha will be built in an oval-shaped design, with landscaping around it being prioritized. A nameplate bearing the title Mahaveera Vrutta (Mahaveer Circle) will be installed, and the circle will be equipped with suitable lighting. Additional enhancements are being planned, with the blueprint for the project nearing completion.
In 2001-2002, the central government decided to commemorate the 2600th Janma Kalyanotsava (birth celebrations) of Bhagwan Shri Mahaveer Swami across the nation. As part of this, the Mangaluru City Corporation renamed the circle as Mahaveera Vrutta. Subsequently, the Jain Society and the Jain community collaborated to construct a beautiful Mahaveer Circle with a 20-ton Mangala Kalasha on a 43-cent plot at a cost of Rs 12 lakh.
Restoration after nine years
The Mahaveer Circle and Kalasha construction began in January 2003 and was inaugurated six months later. However, during the construction of the Pumpwell Flyover in 2016, the Kalasha was removed and temporarily relocated to a nearby spot near the Kankanady road entrance. Over the years, representatives had promised to reinstate the Kalasha and circle. Now, after nine years, the project is finally becoming a reality.
Original Kalasha to be restored
The Kalasha that was originally at Pumpwell was relocated near the Kankanady road entrance. However, the Kalasha suffered some damage over time, and its paint has faded. The same Kalasha will be repaired and reinstalled at Pumpwell.
Initial work to finish soon
“We are recreating the Kalasha as it was before at Pumpwell. The initial stages of work have begun and will be completed soon,” said Pushparaj Jain, President of the Mangaluru Jain Society.
