Mangaluru: KND active in coastal security

Mangaluru: The long-standing demand to hire locals to the Coastal Security Police (CSP), which provides security to the coast, is yet to be realised. However, a locally-recruited unit called the Karavali Niyantrana Dal (KND) (coast control squad) is already working with the CSP.

Over the years, there has been the demand that locals who know the sea, boating and are good swimmers must be recruited to the CSP, especially those whose parents are in the fishing industry. This issue comes up whenever there are mishaps and unwanted incidents at sea. But the government has yet to decide on this

Presently, the district police deputes staff from it to the CSP.

Chetan Kumar, SP of the Coastal Security Police stated that the KND having 200 personnel is a fully localized force – in operations and recruitment. It has been working with the CSP and is similar to the Home Guards. The decision to appointment locals to the CSP must be done at the government level.
