Mangaluru: Additional Sessions Court and second Fast Track Court in Mangaluru held a man guilty of raping a minor girl and impregnating her.
The accused, Vaman Poojary (59), was sentenced to 10 years in jail and a fine of Rs 30,000 for the crime.
The case pertains to a series of incidents that began in September 2016. Vaman Poojary, a resident of Sasihitlu, near Surathkal, had first raped a 16-year-old girl when she was alone at home in September 2016. Thereafter, he sexually abused the victim repeatedly, resulting in a pregnancy.
The victim had given birth to a baby girl at a private hospital on May 29, 2017, and a case in this regard had been registered at the Surathkal Police Station.
A DNA test confirmed Vaman Poojary as the father of the child. Based on this crucial evidence and examination of the other evidence presented, the court delivered its verdict, holding Vaman Poojary guilty under the provisions of the POCSO Act and Section 506 of IPC.
The court also ordered the government to pay Rs 4 lakhs as compensation to the victim.
