Mangaluru: Minister for fisheries, ports and inland transport S Angara hoisted the flag and received the guard of honour at Nehru Maidan here on the occasion of the 75th Independence Day celebration in Mangalore on Sunday, August 15.

Addressing the gathering, Angara said, “I express my sincere tribute to all the leaders who sacrificed their lives in the freedom struggle. We are celebrating the platinum jubilee of our independence and I wish you all a very Happy Independence Day. We have an opportunity to improve the sovereignty of this country. We should ask ourselves whether every individual in society experiences true freedom.”

He further said, “Our wealthy country was weakened by the invaders such as  the British and the invasion is also due to our weakness for infighting. However, we must not forget the Amar Sullia battle, which shook the British from Mangaluru to Kodagu between 1835 and 1837. There are also inspiring stories of our heroes such as  such as Balgangadhar Tilak, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Subhash Chandra Bose, Zhansi Queen Laxmibai, Kittoor queen Chennamma, father of nation Mahatma Gandhi and Ullal Queen Abbakka who fought for the freedom of our country.”

Praising the Union and state governments, Angara said, “It is not an exaggeration to say that we are blessed to have a  leader like Prime Minister Modi during the pandemic. The state government led by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has also launched several developmental projects. The idea of planting paddy in our district’s barren lands instilled a new spirit in our farmers. Also, according to the dream of PM Modi, people in our district have greatly benefited from employment skills developed by people themselves.”

“Around 12,56,821 people of the district have been vaccinated and necessary action has been taken to provide compensation under NDRF AND SDRF to victims of natural disasters. Also, with a  grant of Rs 1,659 lakh,  584 works have been completed.  Through Coastal development authority 65 pedestrian bridges, 10 fish markets, 12 retainer walls, three theme parks, and 13 community halls have been built,” he added.

Angara said, “Five kg rice is being given to BPL cardholders under Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan scheme. 10 kg rice and groundnut have been provided to migrant workers in the months of May and June under the Atmanirbhar scheme. The work on the Plastic Park is underway and the district Rangamandira, Tulu Bhavana, Byari Bhavana, Konkani Bhavana and Cultural Bhavana are also being built.”

“A total of 39,590 liters of subsidy diesel were distributed to beneficiaries at a cost of Rs. 9 per liter. Several projects under NAREGA, Swacch Bharath Mission, Black Water Management, Small Irrigation, and Smart City are taken up,” he remarked.

Angara further urged the people of Dakshina Kannada to prepare for the third wave of Covid and strictly follow Covid guidelines.

“Let us all be self-reliant and work towards building Atmanirbhar Bharath. Also, let us all try to ensure that our next generation receives good education and culture,” he concluded.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary, president of coastal development authority Mattaru Ratnakara Hegde, MLA U T Khader and others were present.

Up to eight teams, including police, fire, and emergency services conducted parades.
