Residents of Pavoor Uliya, an island on the outskirts of Mangaluru, staged a protest on Sunday, September 15, standing in the waters of the Netravati River to oppose illegal sand mining. The protestors condemned the district administration’s silence despite the ongoing destruction of the island due to illegal sand extraction.
Chanting slogans against the district administration, the protestors demanded immediate action to save the island from the damages caused by unauthorized sand mining operations.
The protest was led by religious leader Fr. Valerian D’Souza, Catholic Sabha Mangalore President Alwyn D’Souza, former president Stany Lobo, ICYM ex-president Mithesh Lobo, and local resident Gilbert D’Souza, among others. Many island residents actively participated in the protest.
