Mangaluru Police nab 2 notorious chain snatchers, recover stolen goods worth Rs 13.82 lakhs

Mangaluru: Two notorious robbers were arrested in connection with a chain snatching incident in Surath police station limits and recovered stolen goods worth Rs 13.82 lakhs, police said on Monday.
The accused have been identified as Habib Hasan alias Chembugudde Habib alias Abbi and Mohammed Faizal alias Kodi Faizal alias Shakir alias Faiju.
Police said the duo had snatched a chain of a 75-year-old woman named Pushpavathi on the morning of June 2. They had arrived at the residence of the victim in a stolen bike and fled after snatching the woman’s chain weighing around 28 grams worth Rs 1.25 lakhs.
Habib and Fiazal stole two-wheelers and used them to carry out their chain-snatching crime. They mostly targetted elderly women, police said.
Police said they have recovered gold ornaments worth Rs 12.48 lakhs and two scooters worth Rs 1.34 lakhs reported to be stolen at various police stations, including Karkala, Shirva, Manipal, Moodbidri, Bantwal City, Surathkal, Kavoor, and Mangaluru East.
According to police the accused were habitual offenders and have multiple cases registered against them related to vehicle theft and robbery in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. Habib Hasan has 35 cases registered against him whereas Faizal has 15 cases registered against him, police said.
The accused were produced before the First Additional CJM Court on June 24, which remanded them to 14 day judicial custody, police added.
