Mangaluru police notify “No Horn Zones” to curb ‘unnecessary honking’

Mangaluru: In view of the surge in traffic and associated noise pollution in city areas, Mangaluru police have designated specific areas as “No Horn Zones” to address the escalating issue of unnecessary honking by vehicles.

Police said that the decision aims to safeguard the well-being of government establishments, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and the general public from excessive noise pollution.

The identified areas encompass pivotal sections across the city:

Lady Goschen Hospital Vicinity:

  • Ground near Rao & Rao Circle extending from 3rd Cross Road to Lady Goschen Hospital.
  • Stretch from Lady Goschen Hospital to Clock Tower.
  • Area from Lady Goschen Hospital to Kalpana Sweets.

Hampanakatte Junction:

  • Zone spanning from Hampanakatte Junction to Milagris Church.
  • Path from Wenlock Hospital’s Causality Gate near Milagris Church to Muthappa Gudi.
  • Route extending from Hampanakatte Junction to Mini Vidhana Soudha Building.

Ambedkar Circle Vicinity:

  • 50-meter area from Ambedkar Circle towards Balmath Junction.
  • 50-meter area from Ambedkar Circle towards Bunts Hostel Circle.
  • 50-meter area from Ambedkar Circle towards Hampanakatte Circle.
  • Area from Bavutagudda (Mahila Sabha Building) to Ambedkar Circle.
  • Attavara KMC Hospital to Bishop Victor Turn (Attavara New Road)

Road opposite Yenapoya Hospital, Deralakatte:

  • 100-meter area on this road.

Road opposite KS Hegde Hospital, Deralakatte:

  • 100-meter area along this route.

Mangaluru Police said that motorists are strictly prohibited from using their vehicle horns within these delineated zones. Section 194 (f) of the Indian Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, outlines the penalties for non-compliance.

Offenders face a fine of Rs 1000 for the initial violation and Rs 2000 for subsequent infractions if they use their horns in areas explicitly marked as “No Horn Zones,” the police added.
