Mangaluru: As the New Year approaches, the Mangaluru City Police have issued a public advisory warning against the circulation of harmful links and APK files sent via mobile phones. Cybercriminals may exploit the festive season to hack mobile devices by distributing malicious links and files masquerading as New Year greetings and wishes, the CEN police said in a release.
Mangaluru City Police Commissioner said the compromised devices, once hacked, could be used to share harmful links and APK files extensively through social media platforms, including WhatsApp.
The police have urged the public to delete any suspicious New Year greeting links or APK files received through social media platforms immediately. They also cautioned against forwarding such files to others.
WhatsApp group administrators are advised to monitor their groups for any harmful links or APK files shared by members and ensure their immediate deletion.
Victims of cybercrime are encouraged to report incidents promptly by calling the helpline at 1930 or by filing a complaint on the official website, www.cybercrime.gov.in.
Mangaluru City Police Commissioner reiterated the importance of vigilance during the New Year celebrations to prevent falling victim to cyber fraud.
