Mangaluru: A tense situation unfolded at the Mangaluru District Prison’s ‘A’ block on Monday night (Jan 13), as prisoners reportedly obstructed the duties of jail staff and attempted to assault them.
The incident occurred when prison staff, led by Jail Superintendent, conducted a surprise inspection following suspicions of banned substances inside the cells. The inspection aimed to identify and confiscate items such as mobile phones and cannabis.
During the operation, undertrial prisoners allegedly resisted the inspection by threatening the staff. Reports indicate that they used utensils and other objects in an attempt to attack the officers. They also verbally abused the staff and created obstacles to prevent them from performing their duties.
A case regarding the incident has been registered at the Barke Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
