Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has received proposals to rename six roads and circles within its jurisdiction with names reflecting local cultural and historical significance. These proposals were recently presented during a general meeting chaired by Mayor Manoj Kumar.

As per government guidelines, these naming proposals, which were approved during the meeting, will be published in local newspapers to invite objections or suggestions within a month.

If any feedback is received, the proposals will be reconsidered in a subsequent meeting and reviewed by the standing committee before seeking final approval from the government.

Proposed Renaming Details

Kuntikana Junction Circle as ‘Sri Bhakta Kanakadasa Circle’

A proposal by MLA D. Vedavyas Kamath, senior MCC member and former Mayor Shashidhar Hegde, and the Karavali Kuruba Association seeks to name Kuntikana Junction Circle after Sri Bhakta Kanakadasa. With a significant following of Kanakadasa devotees in Dakshina Kannada, the proposal emphasizes the need for a memorial spot in his honor.

Konchadi Mahalsa Temple Road as ‘Sri Kashimath Road’

MLA Dr. Bharath Shetty and local MCC member Sangeeta R. Nayak have proposed renaming the road in front of Sri Mahalsa Narayani Temple as ‘Sri Kashimath Road.’ The Kashimath institution, established in 1542, holds great importance in the Goud Saraswat community and shares an integral connection with the Mahalsa Narayani Temple.

Padil DC Office Circle as ‘CA India Circle’

MLA Vedavyas Kamath proposed naming the junction near the new District Commissioner’s Office and Mangaluru Junction Railway Station as ‘CA India Circle.’ The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), which has a branch in the area, is a premier accounting organization and the second-largest of its kind globally, with 3,500 student members.

Road near IMA Building as ‘IMA Circle’

The Mangaluru chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has requested naming the circle near its building on Attavar Road as ‘IMA Circle.’ Established in 1928, the IMA is a prominent organization for modern medicine doctors, with branches in 31 states and union territories and its headquarters in Delhi.

Urva Market Circle as ‘Sri Mariyamma Circle’

A proposal by MLA Vedavyas Kamath, the administrative trustee of Boloor Sri Mariyamma Temple, and the Urva Friends Cultural Association suggested naming the circle near Urva Market as ‘Sri Mariyamma Circle.’ The Sri Mariyamma Temple, with an 800-year history, is a prominent village deity temple attracting thousands of devotees.

Emphasis Junction Circle as ‘Sri Gorakshanath Palemar Circle’

MCC member P.S. Bhanumathi, supported by former Mayor Sudhir Shetty, proposed naming the circle near Emphasis Junction on Morgan’s Gate Road as ‘Sri Gorakshanath Palemar Circle.’ Sri Gorakshanath, a 10th-century yogi, was instrumental in promoting yoga across Nepal and neighboring regions. He is believed to have meditated on the banks of the Netravati River in Tulu Nadu.

The MCC awaits public input on these proposals before moving forward.
