A Telangana couple, Teja and Banoth Durga, residing in Mangaluru, welcomed quadruplets at Father Muller Medical College Hospital. The rare pregnancy, a natural conception, was meticulously managed by a dedicated team of healthcare professionals.

Quadruplet pregnancies are extremely rare, occurring naturally in only 1 in 7 lakh pregnancies. They pose significant risks, including premature delivery and low birth weight, requiring specialized medical care.

Journey of Hope and Resilience

The couple’s remarkable journey began with the discovery of quadruplets during a routine ultrasound. Despite the inherent risks, they opted to continue the pregnancy, receiving comprehensive care under the guidance of Dr Joylene D’Almeida, consultant obstetrician and gynecologist. The fetal medicine and obstetric teams, including Dr Muralidar, Dr Ram Basti, Dr Mahesh, and Dr Sujaya V Rao, provided continuous support throughout the high-risk pregnancy.

At 30 weeks of gestation, Banoth underwent a planned cesarean section on November 9, delivering two boys and two girls. The babies, weighing between 800 grams and 1.2 kilograms, were immediately placed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for specialized care.

The pediatric team, led by Dr Chandana Pai and Dr Praveen B K, ensured the quadruplets received expert neonatal care. The NICU team, including Dr Praveen Nayak and consultants like Dr Pooja, worked round the clock to stabilize and monitor the babies. With diligent medical attention, the infants steadily gained strength and began thriving under the care of the NICU staff.

Significance of the Case

Quadruplet pregnancies are rare in India, especially in regions like Dakshina Kannada. This case underscores the importance of early diagnosis, skilled multidisciplinary care, and precise medical interventions in managing high-risk pregnancies.
