Mangaluru: Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Minister and DK District In-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao launched the massive distribution program under the Shuchi–“Nanna Maithri” menstrual cup yojana.

Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker UT Khader, MLA Ashok Kumar Rai, Health and Family Welfare Services Commissioner D Randeep, Director of Health and Family Welfare Services Dr. M. Indumati, MLC K. Dr. Manjunath Bhandari, Mangaluru Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur, and Actor and brand ambassador Sapthami Gowda, among others, were present.

“Nanna Maithri” is a modified version of the government’s Shuchi program in which sanitary pads were being distributed to adolescent girls. Under “Nanna Maithri” menstrual cups will be distributed to adolescent girls in 2 districts on a pilot basis.

Under the pilot program, the state government aims to distribute menstrual cups to nearly 15,000 female students studying in I and II PUC in Dakshina Kannada and Chamrajnagar districts. Over the next 2 months, the cups will be distributed to girls aged between the ages of 16-18 studying at government and aided colleges.

Being a reusable device, menstrual cups are considered to be an eco-friendly, cost-effective alternative to sanitary pads and tampons.
