Mangaluru: A young man from the city here has made a drone from the money he saved by working in the catering industry.

Shamant Acharya, a class 10 student of Canara High School in Dongarakeri here is awaiting his SSLC results. He became interested in drones when he was in class 9 after seeing one at a wedding ceremony videographing the event.

He started working for catering services to earn money for making his drone and after a month had earned Rs 8,000. He bought the items required for making a drone from online shops and when he was short of money for some more items his family and friends aided him.

Shamant learned to make the drone from a few websites and YouTube videos.

His drone has a range of 1 kilometre and can climb up to 60 feet. It carries a 4,000 KW motor and has an F-450 frame.

Shamant has already competed and won awards at school-level science competitions. He also participated in competitions at Besant College and NIT Suratkal and won a prize of Rs 10,000 at the State Level Science Inspire Award Competition.

Last year he used his drone to perform the flower offering ritual to the idol of Lord Ganesha during the Chauthi festival held at the Central Ground in the city.

Shamant has stated that he intends to develop his drone further and make new drones to be used in farming and health services.
